India’s Bars Closing: Why Gen Z Drinks Less

<media:keywords>Sanket Shrikanth, Scandalous Foods, India bars closing, Gen Z drinking habits, hospitality industry India, Madira Vogue podcast, food entrepreneur, Indian sweets startup, startup funding, consumer behavior</media:keywords>

In the first episode of Getting Drunk with Madira Vogue Season 3, hosted by Priyanka Arora, Scandalous Foods founder Sanket Shrikanth shared some very uncomfortable but important insights about India's startup ecosystem, hospitality industry, consumer behaviour and the future of Indian sweet brands.

From building a scalable mithai business to decoding why modern bars struggle to survive, the conversation moved far beyond desserts and fundraising into a larger commentary on modern Indian consumption culture.

India Didn’t Need More Sweet Shops - One of the sharpest moments from the podcast came early in the conversation when Sanket explained the thinking behind Scandalous Foods. India needed more sweet shops, but the restaurant industry didn’t need one more mithai shop. It needed a mithai operating partner.

Rather than opening another traditional sweet store, Scandalous Foods identified a much larger opportunity solving distribution, shelf-life, packaging, and accessibility challenges for Indian desserts in the restaurant ecosystem.

The startup’s approach is simple but disruptive: making traditional milk-based Indian mithai available in convenient single-serve formats with longer shelf life for restaurants, cafés, and hospitality businesses.

The Problem with India’s Startup Obsession -The conversation also touched upon India’s growing startup culture and the glamorization of fundraising. Sanket pointed out how media narratives today often celebrate valuation headlines more than sustainable businesses. 364 days are grind. One day is fundraising.

He further added: Fundraising is a means to an end, not the end. The founder stressed that many young entrepreneurs today begin businesses chasing visibility, exits, and investor attention rather than solving real consumer problems. According to him, the discipline required after raising money is often underestimated.

Why Most Cocktail Bars Fail In India - One of the most relatable segments of the podcast explored the nightlife and hospitality industry.

As bars and restaurants continue opening and shutting rapidly across metro cities, Sanket shared a powerful insight into why many hospitality concepts fail despite heavy investments in aesthetics and social media marketing. “Indians talk about newness, but consume familiarity.”

He explained that while consumers may enjoy experimental experiences online, their actual ordering behavior remains deeply rooted in comfort and familiarity.

From whiskey sours and old fashioneds to classic finger foods, consumers repeatedly return to known flavors and formats.

According to him, many bars today focus excessively on becoming “Instagrammable” instead of understanding customer psychology and repeat consumption patterns.

Bars are becoming studios for Instagram. The discussion also highlighted how hospitality businesses sometimes confuse virality with loyalty, resulting in expensive concepts that fail to build long-term customer retention.

Why Gen Z Drinks Less - The podcast also explored changing drinking patterns among younger audiences. According to Sanket, Gen Z’s relationship with nightlife and alcohol differs significantly from millennials. While millennials associated bars and drinking with socializing and experiences, Gen Z often approaches nightlife through the lens of digital identity and social media performance. People are going out for Instagram, not for conversations anymore.

He suggested that overexposure to social media and changing wellness trends are influencing consumption habits, while performative behavior increasingly shapes nightlife experiences.

Beyond An Alcohol Podcast

What makes Getting Drunk with Madira Vogue stand out is its ability to move beyond surface-level conversations around alcohol and nightlife.

Normal. Modern Wellness Platforms Like Playoga Are Trying To Change That

Modern life has quietly normalized exhaustion.

Mumbai. People
wake up tired. Work through emotional fatigue. Sit for long hours behind
screens. Eat meals while replying to emails. Scroll endlessly before sleeping.
And despite doing more than ever before, many still carry a persistent feeling
of not doing enough.

The modern work culture has created a generation that
remains constantly reachable — but increasingly disconnected from itself.

Burnout, once considered an occasional phase, is now
becoming deeply embedded into everyday life. Across workplaces and homes, signs
of chronic stress are becoming increasingly visible through poor sleep, mental
fatigue, overstimulation, anxiety, rushed routines, and emotional exhaustion.

Many individuals continue functioning normally while
internally running on empty.

Health experts and wellness professionals believe this
growing emotional fatigue is driving a significant shift in how people now
define wellness.

People today are no longer searching only for fitness
aesthetics, flexibility goals, or performance-driven routines.

Instead, they are increasingly prioritizing emotional
balance, peace of mind, mindful living, nervous system healing, softer
mornings, and sustainable ways to manage stress.

As conversations around modern wellness evolve, platforms
like Playoga are emerging to
address this changing need.

Founded by Yoga Master and Wellness Scientist Bhavika
Choradia, Playoga represents a new generation of Indian wellness
initiatives attempting to redefine wellness beyond fitness trends, social
media-driven self-care, and performative health routines.

According to Choradia, wellness should not become another
source of pressure.

"People don’t need more pressure to optimize
themselves. They need spaces that help them breathe again," she says.

That philosophy is increasingly resonating in a world
experiencing rising levels of workplace stress and emotional fatigue.

Wellness Beyond Fitness

For years, yoga has often been commercially associated with
flexibility, weight management, or visually appealing fitness routines.

However, traditional Indian wellness philosophies have
historically focused on a much broader framework — integrating mind, body,
breath, and emotional balance.

Modern lifestyles, however, have increasingly disrupted
those connections.

People frequently multitask through meals, work despite
exhaustion, and treat constant busyness as productivity.

Health professionals warn that the body often adapts
silently to stress until symptoms eventually become difficult to ignore.

Playoga’s wellness philosophy aims to bridge this gap
through approaches centered around mindful living, therapeutic yoga, breathwork
practices, emotional wellness, stress management, nervous system regulation,
and sustainable healing methods designed for contemporary lifestyles.

Industry experts believe wellness is no longer being viewed
as luxury.

For many professionals today, it is becoming essential.

The Growing Importance Of Desk Wellness

One of the major focus areas gaining attention within
corporate wellness conversations is desk wellness.

Modern professionals increasingly spend long hours sitting,
working across screens, carrying physical tension, and remaining mentally
engaged even after work ends.

The impact is becoming visible through posture concerns,
fatigue, burnout symptoms, anxiety, stress-related health challenges, and
emotional disconnection.

As workplace demands continue evolving, wellness experts
argue that employee well-being can no longer remain a secondary conversation.

Playoga has been placing growing emphasis on workplace
wellness through initiatives focused on desk wellness, posture correction,
mindful productivity, emotional wellness practices, and sustainable work-life
balance.

Industry observers suggest that future workplace
productivity may increasingly depend not only on performance, but also on an
individual’s ability to sustain emotional, physical, and mental well-being over
time.

A Softer Approach To Wellness

What differentiates newer wellness ecosystems is a noticeable
shift in tone.

Instead of emphasizing constant optimization and
achievement, many emerging wellness brands are focusing on slowing down,
breathing consciously, emotional healing, balance, and intentional living.

Playoga’s approach reflects this evolving mindset.

Rather than promoting perfection-driven wellness goals, it
emphasizes reconnection — helping individuals rebuild healthier relationships
with themselves.

Mental health awareness and emotional well-being are
increasingly shaping consumer behavior, particularly among younger working
populations navigating burnout and digital overload.

Experts suggest audiences are increasingly seeking wellness
ecosystems that feel relatable rather than aspirational.

Small reminders — to breathe deeply, release tension, rest
properly, and slow down — are becoming meaningful wellness interventions in
themselves.

Because healing, wellness advocates suggest, often begins
not with transformation, but with creating safe space to pause.

India’s Next Wellness Evolution

India introduced yoga to the world generations ago.

The next chapter of Indian wellness, however, may look
different.

Experts believe future wellness ecosystems will become more
emotionally intelligent, digitally accessible, lifestyle-focused, and aligned
with modern mental health realities.

Platforms like Playoga
are positioning themselves within this evolving landscape — not simply as yoga
businesses, but as wellness ecosystems built around emotional well-being,
workplace wellness, mindful living, nervous system healing, and everyday
emotional balance.

Because perhaps wellness was never about becoming someone
else.

Perhaps it was always about finding a way back to yourself.

For entrepreneur Heena Alagh it will be a new beginning as she recently shifted to India from Dubai due to the ongoing war in the Middle East. Speaking more about herself and her journey she says,”I call myself a “child of the universe,” shaped by growing up across different regions, learning new languages, and adapting to diverse people and cultures from quite an early age. This journey across seven states and three colleges broadened my perspective and allowed me to gather ideas from varied experiences. At the same time my parents have always encouraged me to pursue my education strongly. I pursued fashion merchandising and production at Pearl Academy, Chennai. Being creative at heart, I have always been drawn to exploration, constantly learning, refining, and adding a touch of elegance to everything I do.”

Though later Henna chose her career in the investment and real estate market. ”Real estate is the art of owning and shaping space, where land and property come together as both a lifestyle statement and a long lasting investment. Dubai’s market potential is immense. My role as an investment connoisseur is someone who has a refined understanding of investments, carefully selecting opportunities with insight, strategy, and a keen eye for value. In simple terms, they don’t just invest clients’ money; they evaluate, curate, and grow wealth with expertise and taste.”

Henna who is a frequent flyer to Delhi and Mumbai shares about her fondness for the capital. She says,”Delhi NCR is my home. If I talk about statistics, 52% of Indians invest in the Dubai real estate market, so that speaks volumes. Also, the current situation brought me back, and here I am in India, seeing a lot of opportunities. With open arms, I am welcoming new opportunities. It is a fresh start.”

Gorgeous Henna who was recently spotted in a couple of parties in Mumbai has surprised the industry. When asked about her plans in getting into a reality show genre she says,”I have limited knowledge about reality TV shows in India, so let’s see what life brings. Recently I have been to a few places, socialising here was sheer fun, and I was completely comfortable in my own skin, so I guess it naturally turned heads.”

NEW DELHI, February 19, 2026 – A delegation of 120 U.S. CEOs, including Adobe Chair Shantanu Narayen, FedEx President Raj Subramaniam, Microsoft President Brad Smith, and General Catalyst CEO Hemant Taneja, arrived in New Delhi today for the India AI Impact Summit as American tech giants prepare to deploy $67.5 billion in AI and data center infrastructure across India over the next five years.

The investment—led by Microsoft, Amazon, and Google according to The New York Times—positions India as a strategic AI hub. But there's a catch: 74% of Indian CEOs say workforce readiness will determine whether their companies grow over the next three years, per KPMG's India CEO Outlook 2025. The infrastructure is coming. The talent isn't ready.

The five-day summit, organized by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, has drawn 35,000 participants and 50+ ministers from across the world. The U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) is leading the American contingent, the largest U.S. business presence at an AI-focused event in India.

AI native platform CambrianEdge.ai is serving as Knowledge Partner to USISPF at the summit. Harjiv Singh, founder and CEO of CambrianEdge.ai, moderated a panel examining how Indian enterprises can operationalize AI literacy across workforces at scale, bringing together Girish Raghavan, CTO of GE Healthcare; Vijay Guntur, CTO of HCL Tech; Kumaresh Pattabiraman, India Country Manager and Vice President-Product at LinkedIn; and Rohit Kumar Singh, Former Secretary to the Government of India and Chair of the Global Value Chains Committee and Advisor to the USISPF Board.

The panel explored the gap between AI literacy - the ability to use tools like ChatGPT - and AI fluency, which requires the judgment to know when to trust or override AI outputs. Pattabiraman noted that India leads both AI supply (growing 12% year-on-year) and demand (surging 51%), while 60% of workers who need reskilling don't yet know they're in that cohort. Guntur shared that HCL Tech is targeting to double revenue with half the workforce while creating 4,000 new roles that didn't exist 18 months ago, emphasizing that enablement and visibility into new opportunities are key to maintaining morale during transformation. Raghavan highlighted that GE Healthcare holds the largest number of FDA AI approvals and stressed that democratizing diagnostics means enabling non-specialists to deliver specialist-equivalent outcomes - while accountability remains with humans.

"India has the talent and ambition, but our edge will come from how fast we build execution capability across the workforce," Harjiv Singh said. "Marketing alone employs millions in India and AI is already reshaping every role."

The execution gap is real: while 78% of organizations have deployed AI tools, only 6% of employees feel comfortable using them effectively, according to Deloitte's State of AI in the Enterprise. That disconnect threatens to stall the returns on billions in infrastructure investment.

As Knowledge Partner,CambrianEdge.ai offered summit participants complimentary 30-day access to its marketing platform, which integrates content creation, research, and analytics workflows. The platform is currently used by over 300 organizations across 20 countries and emphasizes learning AI fluency through real project work rather than classroom training.

The camp was organised as a walk-in drive and was open to the general public.
